GTA 6 Has Sold Almost 8 Million Copies in Pre-Orders – PS5 Dominates With 74% Share

Grand Theft Auto 6 is reportedly approaching 8 million digital pre-orders, with PlayStation 5 accounting for nearly three-quarters of the estimated total. New figures from video game analytics company Sensor Tower put GTA 6 at approximately 7.71 million pre-purchases across PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, representing an estimated $751 million in gross revenue ahead of its November launch.

There is an important distinction behind the headline: these are third-party estimates of digital pre-orders, not official sales figures confirmed by Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive. Even with that caveat, the reported numbers offer an interesting snapshot of the enormous demand surrounding one of the year's biggest releases.

How many GTA 6 copies have reportedly been pre-ordered?

According to the latest Sensor Tower tracking data cited by GameSpot's November 4 report, GTA 6 has reached an estimated 7.71 million pre-purchases. The tracker puts the associated gross revenue at approximately $751 million.

The figures indicate that demand is already substantial before the game reaches players. However, pre-orders can be cancelled, and the tracker is not an official disclosure from Rockstar or its parent company. The numbers should therefore be treated as an industry estimate rather than a confirmed sales announcement.

PS5 is leading the reported platform split

The most striking part of the latest estimate is the difference between the two launch platforms. Sensor Tower's reported breakdown gives PlayStation 5 a clear lead over Xbox Series X|S:

  • PS5: approximately 5.74 million pre-orders, or 74% of the estimated total.
  • Xbox Series X|S: approximately 1.97 million pre-orders, or 26% of the estimated total.

In revenue terms, the tracker estimates around $559 million from PS5 pre-purchases and $192 million from Xbox. Those figures reflect the same 74/26 split and show how strongly the PlayStation version is leading in the current estimate.

The gap is not especially surprising when viewed against the wider console market. PlayStation 5 has a larger hardware audience than Xbox Series X|S, so a larger share of pre-orders on Sony's platform is consistent with the difference in each console's market reach. The split does not, by itself, prove that Xbox players are less interested in the game.

Sensor Tower expects the number to keep growing

The same report says Sensor Tower is projecting as many as 25 million pre-purchases by launch. If the current 74% PlayStation and 26% Xbox split remained unchanged, that projection would translate to roughly 18.5 million PS5 pre-orders and 6.5 million Xbox Series X|S pre-orders.

That is a projection, not a confirmed target or a guarantee. The platform mix could change as launch approaches, and the final number will depend on how many players decide to pre-order, how many cancel, and how demand develops in the remaining weeks.

GTA 6 is also setting a new purchase-intent record

The pre-order estimates arrive alongside another sign of unusually high interest. Market research company Circana reported on October 28 that 29% of U.S. console and PC gamers intend to buy Grand Theft Auto VI. Circana said this was the highest purchase-intent level it had recorded for a video game in its tracking history.

Purchase intent is not the same as a confirmed pre-order or a completed sale. Still, the result suggests that GTA 6's appeal could reach beyond existing fans of the franchise. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella also said the launch could encourage some players to buy a current-generation console, alongside spending on accessories and gaming subscriptions.

The timing is significant too. GTA 6 is scheduled to arrive just ahead of the holiday shopping season, a period when new consoles and gaming accessories often receive extra attention.

Why PS5 is ahead of Xbox in the current estimate

Several factors could help explain the platform difference. The PS5 has a larger installed player base, while Sony holds the marketing rights for GTA 6 on PlayStation. Those factors may contribute to stronger visibility and a larger pool of potential buyers.

However, the figures should not be read as evidence that the Xbox version is struggling. The estimated 1.97 million Xbox pre-orders would still represent a substantial audience for a single platform. Microsoft has also highlighted strong interest in the franchise on Xbox, and the reported split broadly reflects the different sizes of the two console audiences.

It is also worth remembering that the tracker covers digital pre-purchases. It does not provide a complete picture of every possible physical purchase or future sale.

What this means for GTA 6's launch

If the estimates are broadly accurate, GTA 6 is heading toward launch with remarkable commercial momentum. A reported $751 million in digital pre-order revenue would be a major milestone before release, while the 29% purchase-intent result points to interest that extends across a wide section of the U.S. gaming audience.

But the real test will come after launch. Pre-orders measure early demand; they do not tell us how players will respond to the finished game, how long they will stay engaged, or how successful its online component will become. Those questions will only be answered once the game is available.

GTA 6 release date and platforms

Rockstar Games currently lists November 19, 2026 as the release date for Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The official game page does not list a PC launch platform for release day.

Players considering a console purchase specifically for GTA 6 should compare the total cost of the hardware, accessories and game before making a decision. The current pre-order split is interesting, but it is not a reason by itself to choose one console over the other.

Game Therapist's take

The reported numbers underline just how unusual the build-up to GTA 6 has become. The PS5 lead is notable, but the more important story is the scale of demand across both console platforms before launch. Even the estimated Xbox share represents millions of potential players.

For now, the figures deserve attention but also a clear disclaimer: Sensor Tower's numbers are estimates, not official sales data from Rockstar. The 29% purchase-intent figure from Circana is a separate measure of what U.S. players say they plan to buy. Keeping those distinctions clear makes the story more meaningful than simply calling every pre-order estimate a confirmed sale.
